Preface The Urban and Regional Policy and Its Effects series is designed to present evidence about the impacts of urban and regional policies in a format that is accessible to policymakers and practitioners as well as scholars. The series and the conferences on which it is based are the products of a collaboration between the Brookings Institution’s Metropolitan Policy Program, the George Washington University’s George Washington Institute of Public Policy and Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration, and the Urban Institute. For the 2010 conference, these organizations were joined by the Building Resilient Regions Network, an interdisciplinary research network sponsored by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and housed at the University of California, Berkeley. This volume and the 2010 Conference on Urban and Regional Policy and Its Effects came about with the support of several people at the sponsoring institutions . At Brookings, Bruce Katz, director of the Metropolitan Policy Program, provided the program’s support for this project. At the George Washington University , Joe Cordes of the Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration provided useful advice throughout. At the Urban Institute, Robert Reischauer, president, provided institutional support for this project. A number of other people were instrumental in making the conference and this volume a reality. At the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, Julia Stasch provided support and guidance. We also benefited from the advice of Erika Poethig at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Katie Bruder of the George Washington University managed the conference logistics.
