181 A PPENDIX B Preparation for Second Session You all are a great group to mediate! I think we made very good progress on Saturday, so I’m eager to move forward Tuesday evening. Larry has very generously offered his house for the meeting. He’d like you to be forewarned that he has a dog—and I can testify that she’s a large friendly honey of a dog. If that’s a problem, let us know and we’ll tend to it. To remind you, we decided to meet from 7:30 to 10 pm. Here are some things I’d like to urge you to think about (make notes about, if you have the will): › Cynthia urged you to “walk in the other’s shoes.” Will you concretize that by seeing if you can summarize the positions and the interests you heard expressed by others? One way to think about the difference between positions and interests: . A position is what you want. . Interests are the reasons why you want it. › Be prepared to name the most important qualities you want in the community in which you live. › Be prepared to list the qualities you heard from other people, and note where they concur and differ from your own.
