251 Contributors Francisco Catalá-Oliveras attained his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Puerto Rico and his doctorate in economics at Georgetown University. For many years, he worked as a professor of economics at the Río Piedras Campus of the University of Puerto Rico, where he taught both undergraduate and graduate courses. He has published numerous papers with the Economic Research Unit of the University of Puerto Rico and in international journals such as El Trimestre Económico (Mexico). He has also published three books: Democracia obrera ¿Autogestión o privatizaci ón? (1996); El callejón del sapo: Teoría y gestión del cooperativismo (2004); and Elogio de la imperfección (2007). Catalá-Oliveras’s professional experience has focused on cooperatives and labor unions. Juan Lara is a professor of economics at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras, where he has devoted eighteen years to teaching and research. He previously taught economics at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayag üez, Temple University, and Haverford College. He obtained his doctorate in economics from the State University of New York, Stony Brook. He also holds a bachelor’s degree with a major in economics from the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras. In addition to his teaching career, Lara has more than twenty-five years of experience as an economic consultant and practicing professional economist. He was the director of the Latin American Service for Wharton Econometric Forecasting Associates, a Philadelphia firm dedicated to making economic forecasts using econometric models. He also served as the senior economist for Mexico Services with the same firm. 252 Contributors His most recent publications include a chapter coauthored with Robert Z. Lawrence in the book Restoring Growth in Puerto Rico (2006) as well as a chapter in the book Globalización y desarrollo: Desafíos de Puerto Rico frente al siglo XXI (2005). ...
