He has won several teaching awards at Carnegie Mellon, where he offers an introductory world history survey as well as advanced courses in social and cultural history. He has served as vice-president of the American Historical Association and has been active in the College Board, the National Association for Professional Teaching Standards, several school districts in Pennsylvania and Virginia, and a variety of other organizations .
