ix Acknowledgments I never imagined when I signed the contract for The Color of Crime in 1995 that the book, which was published in 1998, would have a second edition. As the tenth anniversary of its publication approached, I was excited to have a chance to revisit, rethink, and rewrite some of the material. I would not have been able to undertake this second look at my first book without the help of many people. First, thank you to Richard Delgado for giving me an opportunity to write for New York University Press’s wonderful Critical America series. The Color of Crime is in exceptional company. Both of my editors, Niko Pfund, the first time around, and Ilene Kalish, the second time around, offered incisive critical commentary on early drafts and were skilled at gently prodding me to complete the manuscript. The University of Florida’s Levin College of Law made it possible for me to conduct research and hire students. I was fortunate to have superb research assistance from a number of U.F. students, including graduate students Amanda Moras and Maura Ryan and law students Katherine DeBriere, Oshia Gainer, and William MacQueen.
