x i Acknowledgments Because all journalistic endeavors are collaborative, there are lots of people to thank. The New York Times was kind enough to allow expanded versions of articles that originally appeared in the paper to be published in book form, along with the accompanying photographs. Alex Ward, the paper’s editorial director of book development, was supportive of this project throughout. At the Real Estate section, my current home at The Times, I’m lucky to have the collegiality and friendship of Bill Goss, the section’s editor and hands down the nicest person in the world, and my copy editor, Susan Guerrero, who always has my back. Also at The Times, I’m grateful to the photographers who created such beautiful images of my subjects and to Phyllis Collazo, who made it so easy to collect the pictures.
