ABOUT THE AUTHOR Robert F. Reid-Pharr is associate professor of English at the Johns Hopkins University. He has published widely in both the academic and popular press on matters of race, gender, sexuality, and American culture, and is the author of Conjugal Union: The Body, the House and the Black American (Oxford University Press, 1999). In addition to Johns Hopkins, he has taught at the City College of New York, Swarthmore College, the University of Maryland, Humboldt University, and the University of Chicago. He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Yale University, where he earned his Ph.D. in 1994.
