>> 265 Appendix B Interview Methodology and Biographies of Interviewees Eighty-one activists and advocates were interviewed either in person or by telephone between 1999 and 2005. The interview protocol was approved by the Institutional Review Boards at Howard University, the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, Williams College, and Middle Tennessee State University. A life-cycle, semistructured method was used for the interviews. The method was designed to gather the following information: (1) the personal biographies of the interviewees, including their own introduction to movement activism; (2) the strategies, tactics, and policy objectives guiding their organizations or coalitions; (3) the internal makeup and decision-making processes of their organizations or coalitions; and (4) the intergenerational collaborative work of their groups. With the exception of a handful of subjects involved in labor union initiatives (see chapter 9), all the interviewees held influential positions or were prominent voices in their respective movement infrastructures. Most were identified through primary and secondary research such as newsletters, organizational minutes and memorandums, organizational websites, and newspaper articles. Some people were identified through a snowball method in which their names were generated through recommendations from other interviewees. As mentioned earlier, a select number of interviewees in chapter 9 did not hold significant leadership positions. Yet these were interns in the AFL-CIO’s Union Summer program in 2002. The names and contact information of the summer interns were obtained from AFL-CIO staff.
