About the Author John A. Mills started his working life as a geologist and then became a psychologist. He did his doctoral work at the University of Cape Town. After teaching at Cape Town for a year he took up a post at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada. His early research was in verbal learning, psycholinguistics, comparative psychology, and animal psychol­ ogy. For the past twenty years his research has been in historical psychol­ ogy, concentrating on eighteenth­century Scottish philosophy and on be­ haviorism. He is a member of the Cheiron Society, was a founding mem­ ber of the International Society for Theoretical Psychology, and serves on the editorial board of the journal Theory and Psychology.
