| 181 Appendix 2 The Walter Truett Anderson Collection From 1979 until early 1982, Walter Truett Anderson conducted interviews for his book about Esalen, The Upstart Spring (1983). His conversations with key figures from the Institute’s first two decades are crucial to scholarship on the Institute and its relationship to the larger human potential movement. The list of interviews below is from the Humanistic Psychology Archives of Special Collections at the Donald C. Davidson Library at the University of California at Santa Barbara. It is included as an appendix to amplify citations throughout this book and encourage further research. The Anderson Collection contains a number of other resources, but the interviews represent a unique contribution to historical scholarship about Esalen and its relationship to the larger human potential movement. The original cassette tapes were reformatted as CD listening copies. Anderson is a critical but very sympathetic observer whose initial attraction to Esalen soon diminished because of the excesses in the 60s and early 70s and its slow disintegration in the 80s. He is a journalist, political scientist , and futurist. Anderson has a lifelong commitment to humanistic and transpersonal psychology, and he currently serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Humanistic Psychology. His sources reflect his own relationship with Esalen and the social networks that were part of his personal spiritual privilege.
