A Note on Transliteration This book necessarily includes many transliterations of various foreign languages .We have attempted in all cases to provide clear, accessible, phonetically accurate renderings of non-English words. Transliterations of Yiddish have been rendered according to the YIVO Standard. Transliterations of Hebrew have followed a modified version of the Encyclopaedia Judaica rules.
