63 Hearth I tried to read the smoke from the chimney to see if she had waked and put more sods on. The puff of white at first said one thing, then a long spell of none at all said otherwise. It could have been the top sod I had set that fell into the embers and made smoke. What made me turn around and want to look was what she might be thinking had I kept on walking down the road past cottages that held the ground in townlands on beyond the rise there with its spectacle of sea, and then what I would do and where to go was anyone’s idea, even mine or hers, the way she watched and pondered at the window. ...
