Iamoftenoftwomindswhenmembersoftheblackunderclass,“the lowereconomicpeople,”asthecomedianBillCosbyrecentlycalled them,arechastisedfortheirspeech,theirbehaviors—theirfailure, accordingtoCosby,in“notholdinguptheirendin[thecivilrights] deal.”1 WithonemindIbelievethatpoorblackscoulddomorefor themselvesbytakingbetteradvantageofeducationalandotheropportunities .WiththeothermindIseethemanyobstaclesthatblock theirway,thatpreventthemfromrealizingtheirdreams.Theironyof thisdouble-mindedness,however,isthatitproducesacertainclarity, notaboutwhichtochoose—whethertosidewithCosbyorthosehe scolds—butabouthowviewslikeCosby’sareinevitableinourracialized society. InthisinterludeIwanttobrieflymeditateonCosby’sstatement andconnecthiswordstosomeofwhatIsaidinpart1,thatis,whyI wanttobewhiteandwhyIandotherblackmensometimesfetishize oneanother—andsometimeswanttodestroyeachother.Becausethe purposeofthisinterludeistomarkmyintellectualshiftinthisbook fromthepersonal,from“Home,”totheprofessionalandtheoretical, to“School,”IalsowanttoplaceCosby’sdiscussion,towhichIreturn inthelastchapter,withinthelargercontextofraceandlanguage. 73 Interlude HOOKEDON EBONICS INTERLUDE/74 Inhisspeech,givenontheoccasionofthefiftiethanniversaryof Brownv.BoardofEducation(hereafterBrown),2 Cosbycategorically castigatestheblackunderclassbecause,ashetoldthecrowd,“these peoplearenotparenting....Theyarebuyingthingsforthekid—$500 sneakers.”Hethenasks,“Forwhat?”Tohimtheparentsshouldspend morewisely;theycould“spend$250on‘HookedonPhonics,’”he says.WhilemanydefendedCosby’sstatement—eventheuglymanner inwhichhedeliveredit—itactuallysupportsaninaccurateand prejudicial,althoughpopular,pointofview. It’sinaccuratebecausethelandmarkcasethatgaverisetothecivil rightsmovementandthatineffectendedsanctionedsegregationwas notadeal.3 Granted,asaconsequenceofracialization,Brownmay functionasadeal.Butitdoesn’tconstituteone.Thereisnocontract stipulatingthatblacksmustbehaveorspeakinacertainwayinorder toprovewedeservetobenefitfromtherightsallblacksshould havehadlong,longago.Butsincelaws,justlikeeverythingelse,are racedinAmerica,andsinceracestillhasapolarizingeffect,Brownis stifledinitspotential.ThisleadstocommentslikeCosby’sthat—perhaps inadvertently—justifytheAmericanracialapartheidthatkeeps blacksseparatedfromwhitesandthecorrespondingAmericanclass apartheidthatseparatesthe$500-shoe-buying,Hooked-on-Phonicsdenying folksfromthemiddle-andupper-classblackstowhomCosby deliveredhisspeech. Inotherwords,segregationbasedoncolormayhavebeenoutlawed byBrown,butrace(ofwhichcolorwasonlyone,albeittheprime,indicator )wasnot.TheeffectthatBrownwasintendedtohave,buthas beenpreventedfromhaving,wouldhavevoidedraceasamarkerof differencethatlimitsopportunities,especiallyeducationalones,for blackpeople.Instead,thefullachievementofBrownisdeferred—because theprogresstowardmakingracenotmatterstoppedwhenthe focusshiftedfromcolortoperformance.Thuslanguage,dialect,and accentmustnowbeunderstood,atleastinregardtoblackpeople,in thesamewaythatskincolorwronglyusedtobe(andinsomecases stillis),asoutwardsignsofinwardflaws,asverbalmanifestationsof inherentinferiority,asfaultsofcharacter.
