I’madark-skinnedblackmanwhospentagooddealofhisyouth wishinghewerewhitebecausehebelievedhewasfailingmiserably atbeingblack.Tobesure,Iputforthmybesteffortstobeblack,to adjustmyspeechandbehaviorssothattheycoheredwithmyrace.But themoreItriedtoacquireanauthenticracialidentity,themoremy effortsrevealedmyinadequacy.Iwasjustnodamngoodatit.Trying tobewhitedidn’tyieldanybetterresults,although,admittedly,I(and others)perceivedmyselftobeclosertowhatawhiteboymightbethan whatIbelievedablackboytobe.And,speakinghonestly,thoughmy desiretobewhitemaynotbeasintenseorasincessantasitwaswhenI wasaboy,whileitmayhavedulledsignificantly,it’sstillpresent. IfIhavesympathizers,theymighthopeformyracialrecuperation, doingsowiththerecognitionthatitdoesn’tlookgood.Toadmitthat onoccasionIstillwishIwerewhiteindicatestosomethatI’mtoofar gone. Thereiscertainlyanundeniableelementofmadnessinallthis, apsychologicalaspecttomydesiresthatIdon’tentirelyunderstand andhaveyettofullyexplore.Evenso,thatothersmightconsidermy wordspeculiarisn’tenoughtopreventmefromwritingtheseintimate thoughts.It’senoughtostallmeand,infact,hasinthepast. Butit’snotenoughtostopme.Afterall,sharingishealing.Ishould say,though,thatthehealingI’mafterisbestcharacterizednotbya psychologistbutbyalinguist—MaryRhodesHoover,who,whendiscussing theresistanceofsomeparentstoeffortstoteachBlackEnglish Vernacular(hereafterBEV)inschools,saystheiroppositionwas “notevidenceofself-hatred”(1978,65).1 Inotherwords,theparents didn’tloathethemselvesbecausetheydidn’twantblackchildrentobe instructedinthespeechthat,rightlyorwrongly,isconsideredcharacteristic ofwhoweareasapeople.Inordertounderstandtheirfeelings assomethingotherthanself-hate,Hooverrecommendsashiftin analysis:“Theproperinterpretation[oftheirreactions],”shewrites, “issociolinguisticratherthanpsychiatric”(65).
