AspartoftheinterviewforaprofessorshipattheUniversityofIowa (hereafterUI),Iwasaskedtogivealecture.Ibasedmytalkonthe titlechapterofthisbook,usingthesameautobiographicalapproach. Aftermytalkthedepartmentchair,amanwiththirtyyearsin,and whoremindedmeofataller,broad-shouldered,fullybeardedversion ofthemidwesternfarmhusband—overallsandall—inGrantWood’s AmericanGothic,askedmeonlyonequestion:“Ifyoucomehere,are yougoingtobeaproblem?” Hisquestionwasloaded,notonlybecauseitrecalledthequestion thatW.E.B.DuBoispondersinTheSoulsofBlackFolk—“Howdoes itfeeltobeaproblem?”—butalsobecauseI’djustnarratedtheracial conflictsthatledtomydeparturefromjobs.What’smore,thechair andmyprospectivecolleaguesknewoftroublesI’dhadasagraduate studentattheUniversityofIllinoisatChicago(hereafterUIC). BecauseoftheinstitutionalgrapevinetheyknewIhadrefusedtotake arequiredcourseonhowtoteachfirst-yearcollegestudentstowrite. TheyknewIhadwalkedrightoutofclasswhenIlearnedthattwo whitestudentshadbeengiventheopportunitytoshowteachingpro- ficiencybyprovidingaportfoliooftheirexperience.WhenIaskedthe directorofthewritingprogramforthesameopportunity,shegave metheshake-off.Fourmonthslater,aftermuchwrangling,whenshe andherassistantallowedmetosubmitadossier,IplayedwhatJames 125 6 TOBEA PROBLEM CHAPTER6/126 Baldwinoncecalled“thebadnigger”—theonewhostageshisracial andmasculineperformancetoupsetwhitefolks(Baldwin1985,183). Whilepreparingmydossierofsyllabiandassignments,aflashof resentmentwashedoverme.Frommymixedfeelingsofspiteandoptimism ,Iincludedanepigramonthetitlepage,“Youcan’ttakemy joy,devil,”whichIhadliftedfromaKirkFranklingospelsong.Ihad intendedthephrasetofunctionasanexposéoftheracialpoliticsinvolved inthesituation.Iwantedthemtoknowtheyhaddelayedbut hadn’tdeflatedme.TheepigramseemedtoconveyacertainChristian irony:themorethedevilbeatsyoudown,themorejoyGodgives you. HowcouldIknowthedirectorwasJewish?NorcouldIanticipate she’dreadeveryanti-SemiticstatementLouisFarrakhaneveruttered intotheworddevil.AtthetimeIwasn’tfullyawareoftheracistweight thetermbore.IfIhadbeen,Imighthavechosenanother,lessvolatile phrase.Needlesstosay,shewasfurious.Herassistantcried.AndI wasbarredfromteachingwriting.Iwasgivenliteratureclasses,anassignment thatupsetothergraduatestudentswhodidn’twanttoteach writing.Onetoldme,“Youdidwrong,gotcaught,butstillmanaged tostealawaythegoods.”Perhapstheywantedmetotellthemtheparticulars ofmyreprimand,butIkeptquiet. WhatI’verehearsedhere,however,waspublic,andthepeople at UI knew about it. Nonetheless, there I was with my racial past exposed,seekingtobepartofadepartmentthathadneverhadany blacks,letaloneablackmale.Inlightofthisthechair’squestionjarred me,confusedme,andmademewonder:“Isthisatrick?”Ideliberated :“IfIsayIwon’tbeaproblem,thentheaudience,particularly thetwoblackspresent,willwonder,toquotealinefromBaldwin,‘Is heforrealorishekissingass?’Ontheotherhand,ifIsayIwillbea problem,Imightbeperceivedas‘difficult,’‘atroublemaker,’‘ahot head,’‘aracemonger.’”HearingMomma’svoicetellmeIwasthere toassimilate,nottoalienate,Iutteredanacquiescentbutassertiveno.
