9 Walking at Night A dog came into one thin cone of streetlight. Trotted out, erased. I could hear it for awhile and then not, as we became the caves we were, the cave that we were moving through, when strings of light were snapped so quickly out in Harmony Cavern. And then? Our invisible hands, a sneeze held back, an unseen fluttering inches from our eyes. Nothing glowed out from dark stone. And to see nothing move? To scan an empty world, lifeless as the surface of an asteroid in movies from a NASA fly-by, image after image, the moons of Jupiter, each one terrible, without the smallest alteration or shifting, the spacecraft sailing, a molecule across the eye of a dead horse? There was nothing in the darkness. And out in that nothing, a dog 10 * somewhere, the coil and rasp of a shovel scratching gravel. ...
