Many people provided different kinds of support for this project. My fellow medical board members and their staff from across the country, the staff of the Federation of State Medical Boards, and my colleagues from the Citizen Advocacy Center taught me how to be a public member and what medical boards did. Among the very long list of public members who taught me what a public member could be were Mary Del Long, Susan Spaulding, and Maralyn Turner. David Swankin and Becky LeBuhn of the Citizen Advocacy Center started me on my journey of learning what it takes to become an effective public member. Many members and staff of the Federation of State Medical Boards took me under their wings over the years, especially Lisa Robin, Barbara Schneidman, and Kelly Alfred. There are too many others to mention who helped me out over the years, but I would especially like to thank the members and staff of the boards where I sat who put up with me and all the members and staff from across the country whom I met over the years and with whom I often discussed boards and public participation. Many board members and staff across the country helped by providing their views on the medical licensing and disciplinary processes, and several colleagues read all or parts of the manuscript and provided very useful comments . Some commented on the entire manuscript at various stages. I would especially like to thank (in alphabetical order) Robert Dingwall, Joel Horowitz, Bunnie and Ed Lehman, Dmitri Shalin, and Mark Yessian.
