ix PREFACE The works included in this volume were scanned, dictated, transcribed , or typed in from the originals. Several of the pieces chosen as selected readings have been reprinted in other venues, some more than once. A few of the selections have won awards and, where appropriate , we note this information for the reader in either the source statement following the selected reading or in the suggested readings at the end of the introductory sections to each chapter. Some of the selections are quite long or have complex tables, figures, or appendixes that we felt did not add to the reading. These works appear abridged, and we note this as well as where material has been removed in the text. We have to admit that there are some pieces we would have liked to have included in this anthology, but because of space or other technical issues, we could not include them. The reader will find that all of the selected works in Volume II were published or translated into English and republished in the twentieth century. The selected readings are also mostly shorter than those in Volume I because journal space, the primary outlet for these types of publications , has become dear over time. The reader will occasionally find a typo that slipped by the editors of the original works. We have chosen to retain these and have identified them by [sic]. Each selected reading contains its references as they appeared in the original publication. Thus, the reader will note that citation format changes from piece to piece. In order to comply with copyright restrictions, we have limited our editorial comments about the readings to the selected readings section at the end of each chapter introduction. As with Volume I, we hope our efforts present the reader with an enjoyable experience with some of the key published works of the twentieth century—those that made a significant impact on our understanding of public health. ...
