Lisa, thirty-three-year-old white woman Victor, thirty-five-year-old black man (“Obviously black, but I’m human, not a color”) Strategy: color-blind How they met: work They are married and are trying to have children. They live in a middle-class suburb of Connecticut. Both have bachelor’s degrees; Lisa teaches elementary school and Victor teaches middle school. They attend a predominantly white Catholic church. 2. Olivia, forty-eight-year-old white woman (Dutch) Frank, fifty-five-year-old black African American man Strategy: color-blind How they met: community (he came into her workplace) They have been married for over twenty years. Olivia is an office manager and Frank is a retired police officer. They live in a predominantly white suburb of New Jersey. They have two teenage sons: one in high school and one in college. They are Catholic. 3. Sandra, thirty-five-year-old white woman (English, German, and Polish) David, thirty-seven-year-old African American man 196 Appendix Strategy: color-blind How they met: college They have been married for thirteen years and have two children, who are three months old and three years old. They live in an upper-middleclass part of upper-state New Jersey. Both have master’s degrees. Sandra teaches at a college and David works in a firm in Manhattan. Nancy, forty-two-year-old woman of African ancestry (Cape Verdean) Robert, forty-seven-year-old white man (Italian) Strategy: color-blind How they met: community They have been married for three years with no children. They live in Rhode Island in a middle-class area. Nancy has a bachelor’s degree and works as a financial consultant. Robert was in the navy and now works at a post office. They both attend a Catholic church. 5. Brittney, twenty-six-year-old white woman (Portuguese) Mark, thirty-two-year-old black man (he identified as “human”) Strategy: color-blind/ race conscious How they met: friend/sister They have been dating for over three years and recently moved in together. They both lived in New York, but when she moved to Massachusetts to have their baby near her family he followed her. They have an infant son. He has a high school diploma and works with a moving company. She also has a high school diploma and works as a waitress. 6. They recently moved from New York City to a middleclass area in Massachusetts. Jill has a bachelor’s degree and works at a nonprofit agency. Lee works in retail. They sporadically attend a Unitarian Universalist church. 9. Kayla, twenty-eight-year-old white woman Hank, thirty-year-old African American man Strategy: race conscious/color-blind (especially with family) How they met: work (but did not date while there) They have been friends for five years and dating for one year. They live in a middle-class suburb in Maine. Both attended college. Hank owns a clothing shop, and Kayla works as a bar manager, though she used to work with children.
