331 About the Editor jonat h a n j. be a n is Research Fellow at the Independent Institute and professor of history at Southern Illinois University. He received his Ph.D. from Ohio State University in 1994. Dr. Bean is a recipient of the Henry Adams Prize for Best Book of the Year from the Society for History in the Federal Government as well as the Herman E. Krooss Prize from the Business History Conference , and he is a member of the Academic Hall of Fame at St. Michael’s College. He was named Outstanding Teacher of the Year in 2005 and teaches courses on business history, public policy, the Great Depression, and U.S. history. His books include Big Government and Affirmative Action: The Scandalous History of the Small Business Administration (2001), Beyond the Broker State: Federal Policies Toward Small Business, 1936–1961 (1996), and Race and Liberty in America: The Essential Reader (2009). His scholarly essays have appeared in the Independent Review, the Journal of Policy History, the African American National Biography, Enterprise and Society, Business History Review, and the Historian. His popular articles and interviews have appeared in U.S. News & World Report, National Review, the Weekly Standard, Fortune Small Business, American Banker, Business Week, Correio Braziliense, and the Chronicle of Higher Education. He has done background research for Mother Jones, Salon, and CBS Evening News. His public appearances have included on-air radio interviews, a C-Span show, and testimony before the United States Senate.
