Conventions and Abbreviations As might be expected, this book contains frequent references to the works of C. S. Lewis, especially the ten books in the Chronicles of Narnia and the Space Trilogy. Because of the large number of editions of both series, with different paginations, we do not give page numbers for references to the books in this series. For the seven books in the Chronicles of Narnia, as well as for Out of the Silent Planet and Perelandra, we use an abbreviation for the title (see below) and a chapter number in lowercase Roman numerals. Thus the citation (LWW, iii) refers to the third chapter of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and (MN, iv) refers to the fourth chapter of The Magician’s Nephew. For That Hideous Strength, we use both chapter and section numbers in Arabic numerals; thus (THS, 5.1) refers to section 1 of chapter 5, titled “Elasticity” (which begins “Mark woke next morning . . .”).
