NostromotakesplaceduringamilitaryrevolutioninthefictitiousLatin AmericanrepublicofCostiguana,alandthathasenduredfiftyyearsofmisrule. Thetitlecharacter,anItaliansailor,isassignedbythesupportersoftheregime stillinpowertohideacargoofsilverfromtheSanTomémine,tokeepitout ofthehandsoftherebelarmy.ButNostromocovertlystealsthehordeinorder toenrichhimself.Conradwishedtoportraythecrisisofconsciencethat someonewhohasbeenhonestallhislifeexperienceswhenhesuccumbstothe temptationofgreed.Indeed,intheendNostromodespiseshimselfandhis secretenslavementtothetreasure,theill-gottenplunderhehasstolen. With the first draft of the screenplay completed, Lean asked Steven Spielbergtoproducethemovie.LeanhadfirstmetSpielbergonatransatlantic flight,whenSpielbergtoldhimhowimpressedhewaswithhiswork.Spielberg alsoofferedtohelpLeanwithafutureproject.“AsfarasI’mconcerned,” Spielbergdeclared,“youcoulddirecttheyellowpagesofthephonebook.”6 Lean in good time made a deal whereby Spielberg would produce NostromoforWarnerBros.for$30million.Leangratuitouslyassumedthat Spielberg’scasualremarkontheplanemeantthat,ifSpielbergproduceda filmforhim,Leanwouldhavecarteblanche,withnointerferencefromthe producer.Consequently,whenSpielbergcalledLeantoHollywoodfora preliminarystoryconferenceonFebruary13,1987,Leanwasstartledtobe presentedwithanitemizedlistofrevisionstobemadeinthescript.
