BOOKS A number of books have been very helpful in researching the various facets of the Korean War. I found that Clay Blair's The Forgotten War (New York: Anchor Press, Doubleday, 1987) provided an interesting insight into the tactical aspects of the war. Concentrating on the first year, Blair takes a close look at the Army's officer corps and at its readiness in 1950. Another helpful work is Joseph C. Goulden, Korea: The Untold Story of the War (New York: McGraw-Hill, 1982). This book is written with a journalist's flair for covering the war and speaks of aspects of the war not covered by Blair. A variety of books have been written about the war, but not nearly so large a volume as one would expect given the nature and length of the war. S.L.A. Marshall's books are interesting commercial accounts of specific aspects of the war. Robert E. Appleman gives an excellent account of the first year of the war in South to the Naktong, North to the Yalu, the official history published by the Office of the Chief of Military History, Department of the Army, in 1961. n Clayton James's Refighting the Last War: Command and Crisis in Korea 1950-1953 (New York: Free Press, 1993) is also an interesting view of command in Korea. Bruce Cumings's two-volume work, The Origins of the Korean War (Princeton, N.J.: Princeton University Press, 1981, 1990) lays an excellent foundation for any discussion of the war and of u.s. foreign policy in Asia. On the medical aspects of the Korean War, much less is written. The most helpful is the excellent official history by Albert E. Cowdrey entitled The Medics ' War (Washington, nc.: Center of Military History, 1987). William L. White's Back Down the Ridge (New York: Harcourt, 1953) is a journalist's popular account told in the vernacular of the soldier of the day. Though not altogether accurate on technical points, it has some interesting insights into the medical care given to soldiers in Korea. Other helpful titles include Graham A. Cosmas and Albert E. Cowdrey, The Medical Department: Medical Service in the European Theater of Operations (Washington, D.C.: Center of Military History, 1990); Albert E. Cowdrey, Fighting for Life: American Military Medicine in World War II (New York: Free Press, 1994); Frank A. Reister, Battle Casualties and Medical Statistics: U.S. Army Experience in the Korean War (Washington, nc.: Government Printing Office, 1973); and u.s. Army, Walter Reed Institute of Research, 21U unH.IO(mAl)IIY Recent Advances in Medicine and Surgery Based on Professional Medical Experiences in Japan and Korea, 1950-1953 (Washington, D.c.: Government Printing Office, 1955). In addition, all students ofmedical history or social history should read Paul Starr's The Social Transformation ofAmerican Medicine (New York: Basic Books, 1982).
