He graduated from Pikeville College, then attended Salmon P. Chase College of Law, Notthern Kentucky University, from which he graduated in 1991. He has practiced law in Prestonsburg since then and has served as Floyd County Attorney since 1996. James Bates, a native of Floyd County, graduated from Eastern Kentucky State College, then enrolled in the Detroit College ofLaw, now Michigan State University, from which he graduated in 1960. He has practiced law in several eastern Kentucky counties and has served as County Attorney, Circuit Court Master Commissioner, and District Court Trial Commissioner. Stan Billingsley was born in Wyoming. He graduated from Western Kentucky University and then from the University of Kentucky College of Law in 1971. He worked as an attorney in Carrollton, as City Attorney in Carrollton and Warsaw, and as a judicial officer; since 1984 he has served as District Judge. Sue Brammer was born in Maysville in 1959. She graduated from Xavier University, then from the University of Kentucky College of Law in 1984. She has practiced law since 1984 in Maysville, where she has also served as Assistant City Attorney and City Attorney. John H. Clarke was born in 1918 in Maysville, where he graduated from high school. He graduated from the University of Kentucky, where he also attended and completed law school in 1942. Having been a practicing attorney in Maysville since then, he has also served as State Legislator for one term and as Mason County Attorney for eight years. Lige Coffey, who was deceased at the time this manuscript was prepared, was a Russell County native. He began legal practice in Jamestown about 1958. His stories were recorded by the author and his students on July 11, 1988. John L. CoxJr., born in 1921 in Powell County, attended the University of Kentucky for six years, graduating from the College of Law in 1948. He practiced law in Stanton, but served primarily in public office as Powell County Judge, 1950--1954, and County Attorney for eight terms, 1958-1990. BilI Cunningham was born on land that is now inundated by Lake Barkley. He graduated from Murray State University in 1966, then from the University of Kentucky College of Law in 1969. He was in private law practice from 1974-1992 and has served as CircuitJudge ofthe Fifrysixth Judicial District since January 1992. Dean was born in 1941 in Alexandria, Louisiana. He graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1965, received a doctorate of education from Northeast Louisiana in 1971, and graduated from the Salmon P. Chase College of Law, Northern Kentucky University, in 1980. Charles English was born in Smiths Grove, Warren County, in 1935. He graduated from the University ofKentucky in 1957 and from its law school in 1960. English served as President of the Kentucky Bar Association from 1985-1986 and is presently Kentucky State Delegate to the American Bar Association. In 1998 he and ten other ABA lawyers were invited to go to China to meet with various Chinese lawyers. Peter Ervin graduated from the University ofLouisville in 1980 and from its law school in 1983. He has been in private practice since then, both in Louisville and in the western portion of the state. He is a member of the Kentucky Bar Association and has been affiliated with other relevant agencies during his professional career. Joe Evans ill, born in Maryland in 1950, graduated from Western Kentucky University in 1972 and from the University of Kentucky College of Law in 1975. He is a member of both the Kentucky and American Bar Association and currently practices real estate, mineral, domestic relations, and probate law in Madisonville. Richard Getty was born in Pennsylvania in 1946. He graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1971 and its law school in 1974. He has served on the United States Court ofAppeals and on the United States District Court in Kentucky, Michigan, and Ohio. He has co-authored a book and served as a temporary faculty member at the University of Kentucky. Kenneth Goffwas born in Grayson County in 1926.
