david r. colburn is formerly provost and senior vice president at the University of Florida and has been a member of the University of Florida history faculty since 1972. Colburn’s teaching and research have focused on politics, race, and ethnicity in twentieth-century America. He has authored or edited fourteen books, including a new edition of Florida’s Megatrends (2010) and Government in the Sunshine State (1999), both with Lance deHaven-Smith. He has served as a Distinguished Lecturer for the Organization of American Historians and as a Roads Scholar for the Florida Humanities Council, speaking nationally and statewide on history and politics. Colburn continues to write regularly for Florida newspapers on state, national, and international politics. He is the founder and director of the Reubin O’D. Askew Institute on Politics and Society at the University of Florida and also serves as interim director of the Bob Graham Center for Public Service.
