Acknowledgments the idea to write this book, and its title, were both suggested to me by my friend and colleague Brink Messick in March 2008. the book began as a “play” but became a biography thanks to the intervention of Ze’ev Maghen. its final shape is a combined product of a suggestion made by my daughter Katherine Powers during the course of a lovely bike ride in october 2012 and an eleventh-hour intervention by Jerry singerman in august 2013. i thank my colleagues Richard gauvain, tayeb el-Hibri, Pavel Pavlovitch, adam silverstein, and Munther Younes, all of whom read drafts of the manuscript and provided me with important suggestions for improvement; samuela Pagani for bringing to my attention a treatise by ʿabd al-ghanī al-nābulusī in which the Prophet’s relationship with the Beloved of the Messenger of god serves as a model for a loving relationship between masters and their disciples; stephen shoemaker for sharing with me a prepublication version of his essay on eschatology in late antiquity; and all of my students at cornell who read and discussed with me many of the arabic sources used in this project. i also thank the two readers of the manuscript, tayeb el-Hibri (again) and John c.
