Author's Note For transliteration of Russian words and phrases, I have adopted the system of the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (USBGN), but using yo in place of the more cumbersome elye. Where applicable, however, familiar spellings of Russian terms and proper names have been used (e.g., perestroika, Vysotsky, Mikhailova), even where these deviate from the USBGN system. In most cases, the texts of guitar poets' songs are now widely available in numerous different editions, and in some cases song titles vary from edition to edition. Wherever possible, I have cited from a single edition of each guitar poet's work. Where appropriate, I have indicated discrepancies between the commonly used titles of songs and those that appear in the editions cited. Unless otherwise indicated, all English translations are my own. Every effort has been made to obtain the necessary permissions to quote from materials used in this study; if any such permissions have been inadvertently omitted, I wonld be most grateful to be notified so that they can be included in any future editions.
