Poe: Mournful and Neverending Remembrance; Houdini!!!; and Lightning Man: The Accursed Life of Samuel F. B. Morse. A fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, he has received the Bancroft Prize in American History, the Pulitzer Prize for Biography , the Edgar Award of the Mystery Writers of America, and the Christopher Literary Award of the Society of American Magicians. A professor emeritus of English at New York University, he lives in New York City. A NOTE ON THE TYPE The text of this book was set in Garamond No. 3. It is not a true copy of any of the designs of Claude Garamond (ca. 1480–1561) but an adaptation of his types, which set the European standard for two centuries. It probably owes as much to the designs of Jean Jannon. Jannon’s matrices came into the possession of the Imprimerie nationale, where they were thought to be by Garamond himself .
