DAVID W. SMIT is a professor of English at Kansas State University, where for ten years he was the director of the Expository Writing Program. He teaches expository writing, modern drama, and Henry James. He has published numerous articles on literary style, portfolio assessment, and composition theory. His article “Hall of Mirrors: Antifoundationalist Theory and the Teaching of Writing”won the James L. Kinneavy Award for the best article in JAC: The Journal of Advanced Composition in 1995. His book The Language of a Master: Theories of Style and the Late Writing of Henry James is also published by Southern Illinois University Press. ...
