The book is divided into three parts consisting of~an introduction to the period, five religiolls orations, and a section designed to enable readers to compare and contrast the speeches and to see them as constituting a meaningful whole. The five orations-arranged to represent the force and counterforce of reason versus emotionalism -include three by Jonathan Edwards, "Future Punishment ," "Distinguishing Marks," and "The Nature of the Affections"; one by Charles Chauncy, "Enthusiasm Described and Caution'd Against"; and one by Ebenezer Gay, "Natural Religion, as Distinguished from Revealed."
