xv Preface to the First Edition This is the second volume devoted to sedges in the Illustrated Flora of Illinois series. It follows the publication of a volume on the ferns of Illinois, five volumes on the monocotyledonous plants of Illinois, six volumes on the dicotyledonous plants of Illinois, and a volume on diatoms. The Illustrated Flora of Illinois is a multivolumed flora of the state of Illinois, designed to present every group of plants. A description will be provided for each species. Distribution maps and ecological notes will be included. Keys to aid in easy identification of the plants will be presented. An advisory board was created to screen, criticize, and make suggestions for each volume of the series during its preparation. The bomd is composed of botanists eminent in their area of specialty- Floyd Swink, the Morton Arboretum (flowering plants); Robert F. Thorne, Rancho Santa Ana Botanical Garden (flowering plants); and Rolla M. Tryon Jl~, University of South Florida (ferns). The author is editor of the series and will prepare many of the volumes. Specialists in various groups will be preparing the volumes on plants of their special interest. There is no definite sequence for publication of the Illustrated Flora of Illinois.
