Ferenc Morton Szasz, Regents Professor of History, taught at the University of New Mexico for over four decades. Widely known for his teaching and publications in American social and intellectual history, he focused on the history of American religion, World War II, and the atomic age. His best-known works include The Day the Sun Rose Twice, Religion in the Modern American West, and Abraham Lincoln and Robert Burns: Connected Lives and Legends (the last published by Southern Illinois University Press). Margaret Connell Szasz, also Regents Professor of History, has taught at the University of New Mexico for several decades. Although her teaching and publishing focus on Native American history and modern Celtic history, including her books Education and the American Indian: The Road to Self-Determination and Scottish Highlanders and Native Americans: Indigenous Education in the Eighteenth-Century Atlantic World, she and Ferenc collaborated on a few works, including an essay, “Religion and Spirituality,” that appeared in the Oxford History of the American West. This series of concise books fills a need for short studies of the life, times, and legacy of President Abraham Lincoln.
