5· PREFACE TO THE 2012 EDITION · This new edition of Works about John Dewey (Carbondale, Southern Illinois University Press, 2013) for the first time makes it possible for the user to access all items from the previous publications (1995 print edition, 1996 electronic edition, 2006 supplement) as well as the approximately 4,000 entries added since the 2006 supplement. Again, all items have been verified and copies have been obtained. Information in the Prefaces for the previous publications, particularly the Preface to the 2006 supplement, remain generally viable and need not be repeated here. Electronic journals are increasingly a source for new items, but with a delay in availability. Words within titles of articles, authors’ names, and places of publication are recorded as they appear in the individual publications (e.g., bold vs. italic; “Jim” or “James”; with or without initials; Carbondale or Carbondale and Edwardsville; Holland or The Netherlands, etc.). Authors using multiple names, including, e.g., initials or nicknames, are grouped as one, maintaining chronological order. Entries preceded by a single capital letter refer to items from the 1995 print edition; double capital letters, 1996 electronic edition; triple capital letters, 2006 supplement; quadruple capital letters, new entries. As the size of this project grows, indexing continues to be an undertaking impossible to keep pace. Nevertheless, the abbreviated index has grown considerably, and is available at the Center. For this edition, word searches can be used to locate authors and title key words. The sheer number of new and varied items since the last edition attests to the impact Dewey continues to wield in so many facets of life, not only in the United States, but globally as well. His writings have as much relevance today as they had when they were written. It is obvious that his legacy will not diminish. Another supplement has already been started as this edition is submitted for publication. The Center for Dewey Studies staff supports this project wholeheartedly, beginning with the many graduate students, who assist with the library work, to the Director, Larry A. Hickman, who once again has written the Foreword, and continues to provide guidance in the preparation of this volume and to make arrangements for its publication. Jean Ohms, Center secretary, without whom I could not work as expeditiously as I do, handles all clerical work—copying, labeling, filing. Mike McNally and James Downhour helped prepare the final manuscript for submission, and Paula McNally was meticulous with her proofreading. I am indebted to them all. Finally, I am especially grateful to the Makiguchi Foundation for Education (Japan) for their financial support of this project and for the substantial assistance of the John Dewey Foundation throughout the years.
