129 Acknowledgments My study of Abraham Lincoln, extending over a period of more than twenty-five years, has been aided by many people. Colleagues and students in the North Carolina State University Department of History have been a source of inspiration and support. Lincoln aficionados and scholars have provided information and encouragement in my study of this American icon. A special word of thanks goes to Michael Burlingame and John David Smith for their cheerful and important aid in my research and writing. Alexander J.
