 Fifth Illinois Cavalry Roster Rhonda M. Kohl, compiler The following roster of the Fifth Illinois Cavalry offers the most comprehensive data on the soldiers who made up the unit. This information was garnered from several sources, including company and individual muster rolls, soldier descriptive rolls, regimental returns, returns of casualties and discharges , Illinois adjutant general data, census data, first-person accounts, county and family histories, obituaries and grave markers, and the Illinois state archives online muster roll database. Some soldier data may differ from that documented in the Illinois Adjutant General report, because contrary information was located and confirmed through other sources. Dates shown in the table conform to the year/month/day format. The rank column lists the highest rank an individual soldier achieved during the war. The age column reflects the age at enlistment taken from muster rolls and the census. Some men, especially the very old and the very young, gave false ages when they enlisted to thwart age requirements . If the census age differed from that given in the muster rolls, the former was used. All counties are in Illinois, unless otherwise noted. The death column provides the most accurate information on the demise of Fifth soldiers during active service. Data include date and cause of death and, when a soldier died from wounds or was killed in action (KIA), the place he received his mortal wound. In many cases, the cause of death for those who died of disease remains unknown, due to the lack of scientific inquiry and documentation during the war. The Helena hospital records, however, contained diagnoses for many soldiers who died between July 1862 and June 1863, illustrating the types of illnesses these soldiers faced every day of the war, including malaria, typhoid, dysentery and diarrhea, and murine typhus. The men may even have been suffering from simultaneous infections of two or more of the diseases. Many of these illnesses shared common symptoms, including high fever, body rash, debility, and bowel disorders; therefore, the physician ’s diagnosis, which was based only on outward symptoms, should always be questioned.
