vii Acknowledgments I owe thanks to my advisers and teachers who guided me through the earliest stages of writing this book, especially Cheryl Glenn, Elaine Richardson, Keith Gilyard, Jack Selzer, Patrick Shannon, Stuart Selber, and Jon Olson.
