appendix a Informants This research is based on interviews and correspondence with 142 members of Old Order Amish and Mennonite communities in New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Indiana, and Ontario. Of this number, 78 were teachers at the time of the interview. The others were church members in their respective communities and engaged in a variety of economic pursuits. In addition, repeated visits were made to a total of 38 schools throughout these communities. All schools were visited at least twice at different times of the school year, and at least a third were visited repeatedly over a period of several years. Hostetler and Huntington (1992) note that one of the criteria they used for selecting the schools in their study was that the teacher have taught for a minimum of three years. As pointed out in the text, the role of the teacher differs greatly from community to community, and it is unusual for teachers in the less progressive groups to teach more than one or two years. Klimuska (1995) quotes an Amishman in Lancaster County as saying, “The three biggest problems we have are taxes going up, the milk check going down, and teacher has a boyfriend.” In larger Old Order communities with more than one school, the schools visited were chosen largely on the recommendation of community members as well as on the advice of local teachers and former teachers, who often chose to come along on school visits.
