This book is dedicated to my parents and their enthusiastic pursuit of, and respect for, education for its own sake. Their loving and generous support has bene fited me in too many ways to enumerate. I was able to make significant progress on this book through the financial support of the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation in the program on Constitutional Government at Harvard University and through the intellectual and moral support of its directors, Harvey C. Mansfield and Delba Winthrop. Lorraine Pangle read the entire manuscript at one stage and improved it in many ways. Much of what is correct in this book is ultimately due to my extraordinary teachers, to whom I am incalculably indebted: David Leibowitz, who is a model of intellectual clarity, rigor, and liveliness; Clifford Orwin, whose razor-sharp intelligence and wit have been both daunting and rewarding, and who has warmly persisted in trying to get me to live up to the exacting standards he sets for himself ; and especially Thomas Pangle, whose passion for political philosophy, startling breadth of knowledge, and unbounded generosity are more than one could hope for in a teacher. He introduced me to political philosophy and remains my model of its serious pursuit. My greatest debt, however, is to my husband, Michael. His careful and thorough editing has saved me from many errors and pointed me in very profitable directions. As has been the case with every other part of my life since we met in Acknowledgments university, he has been intimately involved in this project, and this has added immeasurably to its pleasure.
