131 Appendix B: List of Issue-Area Categories The author asked each respondent the following question: “Over the last several years, what issues have been of greatest concern to African Americans /Latinos in city X?” Respondents provided a variety of answers to this open-ended question. The author grouped these answers into larger categories . For example, various respondents said that housing, disparity, or gentrification were the issues of greatest concern to African Americans and Latinos. The author grouped these individual responses into one housing category. He concluded that white and African American leaders gave the same response if one said displacement and the other said gentrification because both answers fall under housing. He presents each interviewee’s response under the general category. In the education category, for instance, respondents said that education, busing, magnet schools, or school safety made up the issues of greatest concern to African Americans and Latinos. Each of these specific responses fall under the education category.
