Lenrow arranged the bibliography in terms of adolescent interests and problems and organized the publications in broad categories to include the individual’s need for entertainment and escape, the individual’s personal environment, and the individual’s social environment. Attending to the personal and social dimensions of adolescence, Meek interpreted “needs” as a way to achieve emotional support through social relations. Drawing upon materials from the Zachry Committee , Keliher Commission, PEA Committee on Workshops, and the (ACE-sponsored) Adolescent Study of the University of California , Meek and others constructed a working conception of personal-social development for secondary schools.
