247 Contributors Jenni Back is an associate professor (senior lecturer) in mathematics education based at the University of Plymouth. After many years of teaching mathematics in primary and secondary schools, she studied for her PhD at King’s College London and is an experienced teacher educator working at both initial teacher education and masters level. Her research interests are focused on professional development for teachers of mathematics; comparing approaches to teaching mathematics in Hungary and England; classroom interaction and talk; and communication about mathematics through digital media. Jiansheng Bao is a professor of mathematics education at East China Normal University. His research interests include teacher education, psychology of mathematics education, and international comparisons of mathematics education. Dr. Ruth Beatty is an Assistant Professor teaching Mathematics Methods in the Faculty of Education at Lakehead University (Orillia Campus). Her research focuses on how children learn complex mathematical concepts , particularly in the domain of “early algebra” that has resulted in a comprehensive curriculum for students in grades 4 to 10. Other research interests include models of professional development that link research and practice, and the integration of technology in mathematics teaching. Nadine Bednarz Nadine Bednarz is a professor emeritus at the Université du Québec à Montréal (Canada). Her research interests include mainly collaborative research in mathematics education and professional development of teachers, mathematical preparation of teachers at both pre- and inservice levels, teachers’ mathematics mobilized in their practice, and transitional issues in mathematics teaching and learning. She is a member of the GREFEM (Groupe de recherche sur la formation à l’enseignement des mathématiques). She has published several books and papers in mathematics education in the international scientific community. Catherine D. Bruce is an associate professor of mathematics education at Trent University (Canada), where she teaches mathematics methods courses. Dione Lucchesi de Carvalho has a PhD in mathematics education from Unicamp, Brazil. Currently, she is a professor in the Faculty of Education at Unicamp, São Paulo. She teaches in undergraduate programs in mathematics and in postgraduate programs in education. She is a member of the research group PRAPEM (Pedagogical Practices in Mathematics). Her research interests are on pedagogical practice in mathematics, adult education , and statistics education. Naomi Chissick has been the head of mathematical studies for ORT (a network of schools and colleges for advanced technologies and sciences) in Israel for the past eighteen years. She has worked mainly with secondary schools and teams of teachers in in-service education. Her main goal has been to enhance teaching, with an emphasis on mathematical thinking , problem solving, and learning through inquiry. She has been involved in the implementation of reforms in mathematics education and initiated didactic changes in teaching practices. Nielce Meneguelo Lobo da Costa is a professor in the Mathematics Education Program at the Bandeirante University of São Paulo, Brazil. She works with both pre-service and in-service mathematics teachers at the secondary level. She has completed her PhD in education (curriculum) at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo, becoming part of the research group FORCHILD. Her main research interest is Information and Communcation Technology (ICT) in mathematics teachers’ education and professional development. Yadong Fan is a mathematics teacher at Suzhou High School (China). He is a master teacher with the highest rank for school teachers, equivalent to the rank of full professor in an university. His research interests include effective teaching of mathematics and instructional design. He is the author of a series of mathematics textbooks for high school. Ana Cristina Ferreira is a professor in the Department of Mathematics at the Federal University of Ouro Preto (UFOP), Brazil. She has been the coordinator of the postgraduate course in mathematics education at the UFOP for over four years.
