Appendix Five ORDERS FOR THE NIGHT WATCH, 1785 1st. The naval storekeeper, master shipwright, &master attendant are in succession officers of the night. 2nd. There are nine rounders selected from the artificers sent from English yards. They do duty in pairs. 3rd. The number of watchmen is thirteen, assembled every evening after bell ringing. 4th. The number of posts is five, relieved every four hours by one of the rounders in person. 5th. Every watchman has musket & bayonet, receives three cartridges of powder, (not in force) 6th. The lodge next the gate is the guardroom, the arms are there deposited. 7th. The rounders do not quit their posts, on any consideration, after the watchword is given. 8th. No seamen sleep in the yard. 9th. No lights are admitted in the warrant officers' storerooms. 10th. The parole is given by the commissioner to the officer of the night, llth. When the officer of the night has seen the watch properly set, he gives the parole to the rounders, and they communicate the same to the watch. 12th. No boats go from the yard, nor are suffered to land therein, after gunfire . 13th. Officers belonging to ships at the wharf wanting admittanceare furnished with the parole, upon their application to the officer of the night. Upon their being admitted they give their name and that of the ship to which they belong, which must be given in at the time of their admittance. 14th. A List of those people who are admitted after the setting of the watch is delivered to the rounder of each watch, to the officer presiding over them, the next morning at 8 o'clock. 15th. No boats to go from, or come alongside of ships at the wharf, after gunfire . 16th. In case of an Alarm in the night proceeding either from fire or riot, the officer of the night is informed by one of the rounders, and if the officer deems it of consequence, he informs the commissioner immediately.
