Appendix A Assessment Activities for Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies, Adapted from the TESOL Proficiency Levels Content area teachers who need to develop assessment instruments for their ELLs can use the following assessment activities as a guide. After they find out the English language level proficiency of their ELLs, they can choose for their assessment various topics selected from their content areas, such as math or science. Additionally, the list of assessment activities gives them the option of focusing on one of the four language skills, making the assessment more targeted and relevant in the results obtained. Mathematics Topics Grades Pre-KâK Geometry, dimensions Time Patterns Numbers, operations Language Domains Reading Writing Listening Speaking Level 1, Starting Match pictures with realia in small groups. Draw pictures to express time of day. Imitate pattern sounds (clap, snap) in groups. Count up to 10 objects with a partner, using number words. Level 2, Emerging Order pictures or realia (e.g., from big to small). Draw and write (letters and scribble writing) about morning, noon, and night. Identify patterns in the environment based on oral descriptions. Repeat choral chants involving addition and subtraction. Level 3, Developing Label pictures (rectangle, triangle, circle) according to measurable characteristics. Draw and write (letters, scribble writing, and invented spelling) about special times of day. Put illustrations in sequence or group them according to patterns, following oral directions. Describe the relationship between two objects (e.g., which one is bigger, which one is smaller). Level 4, Expanding Find matching shape words from print sources. Create a short story about an event with a partner or in groups, using drawings, words, and invented spelling. Form simple patterns with a partner, using manipulatives, following oral directions. Ask classmates comparative questions involving addition and subtraction. Level 5, Bridging Find words for shapes, order, and position from print sources. Construct illustrated stories about events, using drawings, words, invented spelling, and phrases. Form extended patterns, using manipulatives, following oral directions.
