361 Ac knowl edg ments o This is the first of a pro jected quar tet of nov els—The Chil dren of Eve, a ref er ence to the Salve Re gina—that will fol low the char ac ters and the themes intro duced here into the 1920s. I first began tell ing my self this story and under tak ing the re search re quired to bring it to life in the mid-1990s. The ear li est draft ma te rial was writ ten around 2000.
