xvii Preface I have worked with Cola Franzen to reproduce in English the irony, black humor, and rhythm of the original Spanish. Ours is a literary translation. We have not left aside literal solutions altogether but we have chosen, instead, to focus on creating English versions faithful to the cultural differences between the two languages. We strived for a language as easy and flowing as the Spanish original. A great part of the pleasure of bilingual editions consists in the counterpoint created by the presentation of texts that speak to what lies in between languages, the thrill of finding how the same effects may be created in a language with very different cultural associations from the original. It is in this sense that we have remained close to the original even if it meant departing from the most obvious and literal translation. We hope that readers knowing both languages will enjoy savoring this game of hide-and-seek in the present volume and that those who read it in one language will learn something about the other.   ...
