APPENDIX G Roy and Dale's Song Compositions SONGS BY ROY ROGERS Roy Rogers composed songs early in his professional career, but he was not as prolific as his rwo companions Bob Nolan and Tim Spencer. On occasion he would compose a tune for one of his movies and ask Nolan and Spencer for their opinion. In 1943 the American Music Company in Hollywood published Roy Rogers' Own Songs, folio number 1. In the folio Roy Rogers and Tim Spencer share credit for the compositions and lyrics of the songs. For some songs Rogers is credited with the words and Spencer the music, while on other songs the reverse is shown. On still other tunes the rwo singers are credited with doing words and music together. These details are mentioned because other sources site some of the songs as Tim Spencer's only. While I am not sure that Rogers actually coauthored the songs, the credits given him in this songbook provides some justification for them to be included in this list. In addition to Spencer, the list reveals that Rogers composed songs with Fred Rose, Peter Tinturin, Lew Porter and others. Rogers shared authorship with his wife Dale Evans on at least seven songs. The last known song that Rogers composed was "Alive and Kickin'," a nostalgic tune recorded in 1991. Every effort has been made to determine the precise copyright date for each song, but sources were not always available or exact. This hindrance also made it difficult to ensure that the list of Rogers's songs is complete.
