The National Archives, The Hague, Netherlands The National Archives (formally the General State Archives, or Algemeen Rijksarchief) in the Hague holds the most comprehensive collection of documents left by the merchants and administrators of the VOC. The most important group of documents is the Dag Registers, written by Dutch merchants and officials who held posts at the VOC trading establishment in Mocha. These logbooks contain daily entries made by resident observers and serve as important records of everyday life. The Dag Registers were copied and sent back to officials in Batavia to be inspected by administrators there. They were then copied again and sent to the home offices in the Netherlands. The Dutch officials also wrote periodic reports on missions to Mocha before the establishment of the permanent, year-round factory, and they sent home comprehensive letters regarding the trade and the political situation of the host country. In the archives, many different types of documents are bound together, especially documents pertaining to the same establishment, so the same reference number may appear for multiple documents . I list the documents I consulted in the following three sections.
