Annotated Errata 1. p. 2. “rough” should be “rouge”. Doubtless, the brick was rough, but I meant the color. 2. p. 5. The bailiff recited “Oyez, oyez, oyez.” It only sounded like “Oh yea.” 3. p. 30. “RAND study” should be “Department of Defense study”. Ellsberg procured the study from RAND, which employed people involved in its creation. 4. p. 32. GSA is the General Services Administration, not the Government Services Administration, although, of course, it is run by the government . 5. p. 49. “exericse” should be “exercise” 6. p. 50. “Clergy and Laymen” should be “Clergy and Laity” 7. p. 54. “tabularasa” should be “tabula rasa” 8. p. 82. “Boyd Douglas” should be preceded by quotation marks, for the start of a quote. 9. p. 109. “Cattone” should be “Cottone” 10. p. 119. “Origeons” should be “Origens” (of Origen of Alexandria fame) 11. p. 129. “in Time magazine” should be “in a news magazine”; the magazine wasn’t identified. 12. p. 150. “Augsburn” should be “Augsburg” 13. p. 150. “1949” should be “1940”. The start of prosecutions of Communist Party USA members under the Smith Act of 1940 was in 1949. 14. p. 156. “three black girls”; it was four girls (Addie Mae Collins, Denise McNair , Carole Robertson, and Cynthia Wesley) who were killed in 298 the 1963 16th St. Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama ; there was a large funeral held for three of them, which caused my confusion. 15. p. 162. “Camel cigarettes” should be “True cigarettes”. Lynch smoked True during the trial, though I had imagined him as a younger man smoking Camels. 16. p. 182. “much to-do” should be “much ado” 17. p. 188. “Loose talk sinks ships” should be “Loose lips sink ships” 18. p. 189. “half jokingly” should be “½ jokingly”. I am quoting a letter, and that’s how it was written. 19. p. 191. “and so-called” should be “and the so-called” 20. p. 195. In “interdiction, etc.,” the closing quotation marks should follow “interdiction” rather than “etc.” 21. p. 212. “tanked up” should be “tranqed up”. In 1972, use of sedatives or mood-altering drugs had not been common. Ellsberg was using a new piece of slang. 22. p. 220. “Inquirer” should be “Bulletin” 23. p. 226. “In the case” should be preceded by quotation marks, for the start of a quote. 24. p. 239. “(as these defendants had)” should be “[as these defendants had]”.
