A This book has been many years in the making; consequently, the debts of gratitude we owe for its completion are many.We are grateful to Ian Angus for introducing us both to Charles Taylor’s work as undergraduate students in the Humanities Department at Simon Fraser University. Later, during Ph.D. studies in the Religious Studies Department at McMaster University , Travis Kroeker encouraged us to engage Taylor’s work in its theological implications and thus helped to inspire this project in its early stages. We are grateful to Travis for that, and to our other professors and fellow students at McMaster, who made this undertaking seem important and necessary rather than only daunting. The School of Graduate Studies at Mac has our thanks for building and safeguarding a context in which doctoral students are supported in the pursuit of research projects that stretch and challenge. In our experience, Chuck has always made time for conversation at conferences , after public lectures, and by e-mail.
