This book is the result of a long-standing professional and personal interest in sustainable development. It brings together in a single volume much of my research on global governance, institutions, and chemicals politics and policy making that I have been engaged in since the mid-1990s. I have been privileged to work in several academic environments that have helped me better understand interconnected natural science and social science aspects of chemicals management issues. These include the Department of Water and Environmental Studies at Linköping University, the Environmental Policy and Planning Group at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs and the Center for International Development at Harvard University, and the Department of International Relations at Boston University. In all of these places, I have been fortunate to meet people who have acted as great advisors, mentors, and inspirations. Over the years, my research on global, regional, and domestic chemicals politics and management has been funded by grants from different funding agencies and organizations. In particular, I thank the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Environmental Research, the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, and the European Commission for enabling me to travel and conduct empirical research at international political and scientific meetings and meet with a wide range of policy makers and policy advocates. In addition, I am grateful to the Boston University Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future for the support that helped me to conclude writing this book.
